My Septoplasty Experience

Septoplasty  is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum — a displacement of the bone and cartilage that divides your two nostrils. During septoplasty, your nasal septum is straightened and repositioned in the middle of your nose.

after a year of waiting and 3 cancellations I finally got a surgery date which was the Wednesday 22nd February. I had to be at the hospital at 7am and I went in to the theatre at 12:30.

I wasn’t allowed to eat or drink. So I hadn’t eaten anything since 9pm the day before.

I had to go through details with the surgeon so they knew I was the right person.  I was taken into the huge theatre. It was a long room with 10 different beds with patients On as well as surgeons running up and down. I was then layed on the bed and given the general anaesthetic.

I woke up at 3:30 and was rolled into the recovery area.

I wasn’t in any pain but It was uncomfortable as I had a splint in my right nostril. Also I had sweaty eyelids as the pressure from the anaesthesia was realising. I went home a few hours after.

I was given medicine for inflammation. Which I had to take for 7 days.

4 days post op I had to go to the store and I got a few stares from people as I had to keep my dressing on for any leakage.

It’s been 2 weeks now and I had to have my splint taken out which was stitched to the inside of my nose. The doctor forgot about the stitches so she tried to pull it out n twisted it so it was standing upright. That was painful. She then took a craft knife and cut the stitches, pulled put the splint and vacuumed my nose.

I can definitely breather better. I was hoping I didn’t lose my sense of smell. I’m waiting for the cut in my nose to heal and it’ll be perfect.

2 weeks post op
